Monday 22nd January - walks ***** – Colchester Zoo – sunny, breezy and mild:).

Our son Dan and Jay treated us to a day at Colchester Zoo, with Storm Isha passing through over night with rain and strong winds we were a little nervous especially as the Orwell Bridge was closed but luckily the swinds had eased back, the sun was out and the bridge was now open as all was set for a good day:) Dan picked us up at 9 and the lovely Maeva was pleased to see us and we arrived at the Zoo around 10 and I was surprised to see the carpark was filling up ! It was a lovely clear blue day but walking around the zoo which is set in nice countryside you were sheltered for the most part, it was mild too, in fact it was too hot when visiting the indoor sections. We had the most wonderful day actually walking nearly 6 miles being there until it close dat 4! We had so many highlights, starting with some huge lizzards, several of the enclosures seemed empty to start with but things just got better and better! The 4 seal lions were amazing, seeing then first from above swimming in their large pool and then you could walk in a tunnel under the water which was great with the seals swimming overhead, mostly upside down! Then onto the orangatans who sat outside covered in sacking like something out of ET!We were just in time to see the pebguins being feed although they were a little smelly! Back to see the seal lions being feed, then while Dan and Jay go and feed the brightly coloured Lorijeets (small parrots) while we took Maeva for her sleep, seeing a huge pig, tortices, llamas, Guinee pigs and went in the the goats, were lucky enough to see the hyenas, wart hogs before meeting up again with Dan and Jay by the amazing elephants, also seeing the rhinos, zebras and ostriches. Dan had booked a spot to feed the giraffes and had a wonderful time giving Vera a bucket of leaves which she took with her very long tongue, Maeva woke just in time to see it all, we really loved it:) Then back to feed the fantastic parrots again, Dan even got them on his head, they were so noisy too! We had already had our picnic lunch earlier so being mid afternoon we stopped for a cuppa and Maeva favourite, rich tea biscuits, the sparrows also enjoyed them too:) We spotted a very friendly Robin before we were treated to a fine performance by several lemars whizzing around high in the air. It was getting near closing time now but we still had time to see the Red Pandas, wolves and an amazing tiger before leaving as the sunset over the most perfect day, great fun was had by all, a big thankyou to Dan and Jay for treating us:)
